Kovar foil contains about 29% nickel, 17% cobalt, and 54% iron. This exact alloying provides it with a thermal expansion rate that is comparable to borosilicate glass and some ceramics, and as such, it is suitable for hermetic seals. The foil has good mechanical strength and thermal stability even at thin gauges. Its tensile strength is usually 450 to 550 MPa and yield strength close to 350 MPa, with elongation of approximately 20%. Its low and stable coefficient of thermal expansion, approximately 5 × 10⁻⁶ /°C, makes it compatible in temperature-sensitive assemblies and applications.
